Ahh; if you didn't live almost 3000 miles away I'd invite you to my "Wine and Chocolate" Valentine's Party (Ladies Only). It's my first holiday themed party ever, and there will be (of course), wine and chocolate, games, prizes and tasty finger foods.

Oh Hunt, you're too much! I haven't read The Letter in many thousands of years and had forgotten all of that, but thank you for reminding me also that Nathanael and his wife, Sophie, had a very sexy love life together. If he's going to be in charge of my love life from the spirit world (who knows? Maybe Mr. Emerson said, "Nate, I can't manage to get anything going for her. Why don't you take it?"). We can only hope. A nice stormy, Calvinist-leaning Transcendentalist would be just the thing for me.

What you forget, I think, is the nature of the Hawthorne symbol. The "A" only means "adultress" at the beginning; later is comes to mean "Able" and "Angel," which seem much more appropriate in this case. In the scaffold scene, the "A" comes to stand for family (Hester and Dimmesdale, with Pearl the "little line connecting them" - something like that; it's been years). Upside down, the "A" becomes a "V" - perhaps a happy anticipation of Valentine's Day (though I personally put little credit in holidays created by Hallmark). Remember please, my dear, that a symbol does not dictate meaning but opens it up, particularly when wielded by a transcendenalist -- OK, a dark transcendentalist, but still. After all, I know The Scarlet Letter is not exactly a cheery book when it comes to relationships, but it ain't all bad. Remember that little slap-and-tickle scene with the minister and Hester in the forest? If you're a minister with Hawthorne looking over your love life, it might be pretty exciting - just don't engage in hypocrisy - the only real sin (and that don't strike me as you).

Oh please "too old?" You are not "too old." You're not even "old."

You are however as bad as my hubby, lamenting how hard it is being 35.
