Our Father
April 28, 2006 on 2:26 am | In Uncategorized |I was in a group of 13 UUs today doing an exercise during which we were pretending to lead part of a funeral service. At one point the worship leader told us to join hands and recite the Lord’s Prayer together. Without hesitation, we all did.
It wasn’t until hours later when I realized, oh my god, everyone there (including several life-long UUs) knew the Lord’s Prayer by heart!
So for the UU Mom who was worried that her kids would never learn any prayer by heart,

don’t worry! They might soak one up by osmosis.

We recite the Lord’s Prayer during services every Sunday at the Universalist church I grew up in in central CT. Of course, we’ve also got a stained glass Jesus delivering the Sermon on the Mount behind the pulpit, hand out Bibles to the fifth grade Sunday School, have a bapistry in the sanctuary, recite an explicitly theistic doxology, and we’ve got Mark 12:30-31 written out in big letters on the side of the building. It wasn’t until I left New England that I discovered that this isn’t standard practice in all UU churches. Too bad, perhaps.

I know the Lord’s prayer from watching many movies about exorcisms, Catholic angels and demons.

I didn’t learn it until I was about 20, when I was attending an Episcopal church, which is why I am (with Hubby) a “trespasser.”
