Which makes me wonder, is UUism just a “generic religion” for unchurched folks who want something spiritual but not specific for their kids?

Is UUism just a “generic religion” for unchurched folks who want something spiritual but not specific for their kids?
As one who is not parenting, but has been involved in ministries with kids and parents for more than a decade, I fear ’tis true. I’d even estimate that fewer than 1 in 5 families is coming to church looking for UU content or identity formation in any manner…most seem to want childcare while Mom (rarely Dad) gets an hour of peace in worship. One view I heard repeatedly in a recent congregation was some version of “I was raised without any religion (or in xyz religion I now reject) and I think my kids will find what they need at 40 or 45, like I did.”
Breaks my heart. Has challenged my vocation…fills me with doubts about what UUism will look like as the demographics of our country shift in the coming generation.
I think this is a mighty big and important question.

Actually, I’m one of those parents that considered a UU church, because I wanted to bring my kid up with something in the way of values, beliefs, etc.
The faith I was raised in is not an option as far as I’m concerned, and there aren’t many churches I feel comfortable in. For the time being I guess we’ll figure it out in our own way at home.
