New Brain
August 20, 2007 on 10:09 pm | In Mind of the Minister |My new Dell Inspiron should arrive in about three weeks. This old thing is so slow and crotchety I just went ahead and got the newer version. My computer is truly my second brain and I go to absolute pieces when it doesn’t work 100%. Everything is on here. All church notes, sermons, writings, personal correspondence, photos, music. Blog postings, doctoral work, e-mails, my entire written connection to the outside world.
It seems that I’ve got the new Windows Vista software in the new ‘puter. I’ve been using XP for three years now: what do I have to look forward to? And to dread? Any comments? Warnings?

PB,
There may be some issues with compatibility with other older software applications you may have on the old machine which you wish to reload to the new one. I have XP and have not made the move to Vista.
Also, Please buy an external memory device and save ALL important material from old machine beofre setting up new one. This will save you hours of grief. I think you have a friend who is a “techie” who could advise you how to accomplish this task.

Oh, honey. Vista is dreadful. On all of the computers I ordered at the U of C for my faculty this spring, we paid extra to have them DOWN-graded to XP, simply because there are too many compatability issues and it was a freakin’ nightmare.
I second the advice for an external hard drive for your backups — it’s invaluable to have your data in at least two places (old ‘puter and external drive) before you make this transition. And if you CAN downgrade, DO. XP has its issues, but nothing like Vista.

Vista can be OK. If the computer is top of the line and was designed FOR Vista you should be fine. My sister’s new laptop runs it just fine but only slightly older Dells have trouble.
Most of the differences she’s encountered are cosmetic. In general it works pretty much like Windows always has though there are some new “features” she can not STAND and turned off immediately.

I third the advice about having an external hard drive. I nearly lost all of my data once - never again!
I would also agree that XP is miles and away better than Vista in terms of smooth running - it might be worth having your new machine downgraded before it arrives.

Vista is fine - not great, but fine.
Just dont be surprised if Dell tells you that there will be a delay in delivery…..

I never commented on your blog(s) before yesterday, although I’ve been reading for quite some time, and now three comments in two days!
Anyway, I hate, hate, hate Windows Vista! I used it on my new Dell laptop for months before I decided that I’d had enough. Although I had a super-fast processor and a large cache, I just couldn’t take Vista’s constant, unrelenting issues: niggling problems, slowness, and stalling every day, plus a new big software compatibility or similar issue every week. Also, many of the trusty old familiar functions have been (re)moved or renamed. I finally gave up and paid to go back to XP, and I’m thrilled with that decision. I will say that Vista does some cool, but relatively useless, graphics things. It’s certainly not worth the hassle, IMHO.

I’m with (most of) your other commenters. Vista is mostly a disappointment. We bought my wife a new Dell desktop a few months ago and I wish I’d known that it was also still avail with XP.
Lot’s of software incompatibility issues, and Vista is sloooow even on fast hardware. Basically, I’ve been told Vista is fine, as long as you have at least 2GB of memory and only run Internet Explorer and MS Office…
Since I’m a geek for a living, I’m currently investigating swapping out the hard dive in the machine and installing XP myself (not an option for a lot of folks, I know…)
