I was just in the mountains over fall break for a few days (recovering from two straight months of 60-70 hour work weeks, UGH ARGH) and there in the middle of Hot Springs, NC near the Tennessee border was a man in a Sox t-shirt. Red Sox Nation lives! (He looked like a tourist, but I suspect he was a tourist from here in NC, there with his family --there were a spouse and kid with him.)

Just so you know we're out here :-).

in the last five years or so it's become pretty commonplace for the home fans to throw back the visiting team's home runs. i believe the trend started at wrigley, but now is ubiquitous throughout the league.

btw, how much are the fox execs dreading the likely prospect of a colorado-cleveland series? which is kind of a shame if people treat it as an afterthought, because you'll have an historically hot single-season team up against an historically frustrated one.
but, as a yanks fan no way can I dance on the sox graves yet--there are still enough guys left over from the miracle of '04.

yeah, and I went to Cleveland in July to watch the Sox play in Jacobs Field, and the stadium was not even half filled, and the crowd was pretty subdued, except for that guy playing that big drum up in the corner. Sox fans still rule!

However, I concur about the crazy throwin' the home run ball back in the field. Totally pyscho.

Hmm. Wikipedia and some other sources say that the team's name isn't so great. That may be true; I don't know. But I do know that Cleveland fans believe what I said above.

And yes, they are dedicated and a bit insane. I came from Ohio to Wrigleville and found that Cubs fans are more well-balanced, though more willing to sit in the field watching the Cubs lose. Sox fans are meaner and more profane, but they have that World Series trophy to brag about.

Just as a note: the Cleveland Indians are named for one of their players, Lou Sockalexis, who was a much-beloved Penobscot member of the team. The name is in homage to him and not meant to be racist. Also, the logo was redrawn several years ago to be less of a caricature. Chief Wahoo is still pretty bad, as is the hatchet motion, but they're working on it.

I don't care about baseball. I've been to maybe two Indians games in my life. The Canton Indians, from my hometown, moved to Akron and became the Aeros, which is an improvement, and their mascot is a, um, well, he looks kind of like Sonic the Hedgehog, so who knows what he is? But Cleveland gets a bad rap for their team name.

After the Indians gave my Angels a crazy beating, I am so torn. I never thought I would ever be rooting for the Sox. I might have just move over to the National League and cheer for the Rockies.

I remember when we had GA in Cleaveland and we had the protest in the rain against Chief Wahoo.

Those fans were ruthless.
