Cheeseburgers Make You Unlovable, According To Subway’s Marketing Team
January 3, 2008 on 11:43 am | In Rants: Sexism |Man, this frosts me so much it makes me cuss.
Is this misogynist commercial that preys on women’s insecurities and America’s pathological fat-phobia someone’s idea of funny? I don’t eat at Subway, but I definitely won’t now. I hope that those of you with a moment of time will call their corporate headquarters at (203)877-4281 and talk to Monica at extension 85, who will take down your complaint and share it with the marketing and advertising team. I just did, and she was really polite and nice.
Thanks to Jezebel for the link.

Ohhhh! (Steam from ears.) I just sent an email via their website:
“You’re running a commercial that claims eating certain kinds of food will lead to losing a boyfriend and self-esteem? What??? I have three young daughters — is that what I should be teaching them? That if you eat the wrong thing, no one will love you and you should have no self-esteem? I noticed on your drop-down “About Us” menu that you have a page about “Helping Society.” Oh, I know! “We’re ridding the world of fat chicks!”
Congratulations.

I dunno. I eat at Subway a couple times a month.
I think pointing out that certain foods make you fat, have pesticides, hormones, and all the empty calories which can interfere or block your normal hunger / satiation response, which in turn make you fatter than you might otherwise be, is a good thing.
The commercial is also a reminder that our actions may have unintended consequences, and what we actually do have some control over.
I mean, we’d do the same pointing out when it comes to religion, why not food?

I saw that on TV the other day. BTW, I’m pretty sure the guy has recently been Mark’s gay boyfriend on Ugly Betty.
I’m all for eating healthy, but that commercial is out of line - Subway’s the one fostering lack of self esteem, not eating a cheeseburger.

Apparantly men can eat whatever they want! They can get heavier and heavier and still demand that their spouse/girlfriend/mistress lose weight. I guess Subway likes their female customers to be in controlling and abusive relationships. It’s good for business.

The ad is in appalling taste and I don’t understand how anyone could find it the least bit amusing, though that’s obviously the desired effect. There’s nothing wrong with good natured cynicism/snark, but in addition to being woefully unfunny the message of this commercial is so mean-spirited.

The physical side effects I could agree with, but “loss of boyfriend” and “loss of self esteem” just seem so out of left field and wildly inaccurate …. how did that get past anyone? Was it supposed to be funny?

Wow. That’s appalling.

Another good reason to patronize my local sub shop. They have fresh goods made in house and no horse puckey about my dietary choices.

i will be the dissenting justice on this one; i have seen the commercial in question and it made me laugh, albeit half-heartedly. well maybe, at most, i snorted.
in any case, i understood the marketing message to be that typical fast food is unhealthy, and ends up making people feel bad about themselves when it contributes to lifestyle-related obesity. i don’t know if it was a subway commercial, but someone else was running similar ads recently with men & women in which they each order things like “spare tire and fatigue with a side of heart congestion” (ok i’m heavily paraphrasing). let’s also not forget the rash of commercials recently featuring male athletes who turned “fat” and now thanks to frozen meals/shakes/pills/patches they are no longer considered undesirable by their wives/girlfriends. it’s a concept that now applies to men & women alike!
but what do i know? i watched “bridgette jones’ diary” halfway through before i realized that renee zelwegger was supposed to be the fat girl. i was so confused…

Come on! I love that commercial. It’s spot on. And hurray for Subway for promoting healthy foods and making a profit in a socially responsible way. It’s hypocritical to get mad at Subway for giving you a reality check and reminding you what it is you really are choosing when you scarf that fast food burger. I lost 70 lbs 10 years ago, and I find I am like a recovering alcoholic - it takes constant awareness to avoid slips and giving in to constant media messages to overeat and to eat the wrong things. It’s pretty wonderful to get a corporate media message that reinforces positive behavior for a change!
