I’ve been saying all week that anyone who doesn’t think Palin was going to rock hard tonight wasn’t paying attention. Barack Obama didn’t call her an excellent debater for nothin’, doggonit.

Is it just me, or is Sarah Palin just wearing those glasses to look smart?????????????? When I put on MY glasses, and when everyone else I know does, their eyes don’t look the exact same size as when they’re not wearing their glasses. In fact, mine are reduced to tiny espresso beans. Maybe the Governor is far-sighted rather than near-sighted, but I think it’s possible that there is NO CORRECTIVE PRESCRIPTION WHATSOEVER in those lenses.

This is an official rumor. Feel free to spread it. I ain’t the only one who thinks so, either.

The thing is, this is so subtle that a lot of Americans wouldn’t even know it’s a joke. Don’t believe me? Go to www.whitehouse.org and read the letters from the many outraged readers who think it’s the real site for the real White House (and consider this a warning: the site uses very graphic language). But this bit of sad hilarity featuring Sarah Silverman? It won’t go “viral” because too many people won’t get it. (I’m sorry for how negative this post is. I’m very cranky today.)

My friends Michael and Paul know that I’m trying to improve my Spanish skills so as we’re browsing through the magazines at Barnes & Noble tonight, Michael picks up a Spanish version of People magazine (cover: “EXCLUSIVA EDUARDO YANEZ - El Hombre Max SEXY”) and gives it to me, saying “Hey, read this!” Totally genius idea. There I was trying to slog through novels and plays when I could have been enjoying myself! And seriously… I am so much more likely to spend half an hour reading and translating People magazine articles than I am Miguel Cervantes in the original. Sometimes you have to just do what works for you and to hell with literary merit.

Of course, all this isn’t helping me finish tomorrow’s Homecoming worship service.

Meet Ups

Have any of you ever attended a MeetUp? I’m a big believer in social networking as a positive way to create instant community, so I try to attend them a few times a year at least. I like the democratic nature of these things: loosely organized, open to anyone, very reliant on people’s flexibility and good will. Sometimes the organizer is a dingbat and fails to make the group easy (or possible) to find. Sometimes you wind up on a sort of blind date with one other person who shows, even though eight people said they’d be there. Sometimes it’s a great, rowdy time. Sometimes it’s a great, rowdy time that turns into a depressing display of alcoholism and loneliness and you have to back out the door and make a run for it. Sometimes the movie/music/dancing/event is awesome, sometimes it’s dull or pretentious, and sometimes you drive around looking for parking for so long you give up in frustration and go home.

I still want to attend local Spanish language MeetUp but I haven’t gotten up the nerve. The folks who sign up for it seem to be nearly fluent and I’m nervous that I’d sit there sucking down sangria and thinking of grammatically-correct phrases five minutes after someone asks me a question or directs a comment my way. “Si! Muy bien!” ::staring down at my burrito:::

But this new Meetup looks right up my alley. I think if you do it right, you probably don’t even have to find parking… you can just attend on the astral plane. I wouldn’t even have to wash my hair.
