One of my parishioners makes the best cranberry sauce I have ever eaten. I have tried to replicate her recipe with no success! So this is my version, with a bow to M.E. to acknowledge her superiority as Cranberry Sauce Mistress.
1 package of fresh cranberries
handful of dried, unsweetened cherries
apple cider
1 1/2 oranges: the zest of one, chopped, and the juice of 1 and a half (use a reamer)
sugar and maple syrup to taste
brandy to taste
pinch of nutmeg
1 stick cinnamon
Throw everything into a saucier over low-medium heat and simmer until the cranberries have all burst, about 15-20 minutes. Taste as you go and don’t overdo the sweetness. This should be a concentrated, tart condiment.
Fantastic on next-day turkey sandwiches piled with plenty of mayonaissey cole slaw!
Wow – this looks great and sounds like my grandmother’s recipe (and she served it in the same pink glass turkey dish). She died in September so we are going through the first round of family holidays without her but this was good to see.
Thanks
